A History Within Nature: The Ancient City of Olympos

Antalya is rich in ancient cities. As you travel from the west to the east of the city, you will encounter many ancient cities along the way. We have previously talked about the ancient cities of Aspendos, Side, Perge, Sillyon, and Termessos. Now, we will introduce you to the Ancient City of Olympos. Where is it, what can you do there, and what are its features? You will find the answers in this article.

The Ancient City of Olympos is located in Antalya's Kumluca district, about 10 kilometers north of Mount Tahtalı. Olympos is also known as the "City of Gods." While the exact date of the city's founding is unclear, its name is mentioned on coins from 168-167 BC. Additionally, it is believed to have been founded during the Hellenistic period, around 300 BC.

In the Ancient City of Olympos, traces of the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods can be found. Some of these include the acropolis, cistern, temple ruins, sacred road, Byzantine church, and sarcophagi. One of the most notable attractions is the sarcophagus of Captain Eudomus, which features a poem and relief carving. This sarcophagus, located in a rock crevice near the beach, draws significant attention. It's also worth mentioning that many ruins in Olympos remain yet to be discovered.

What to Do?

The Ancient City of Olympos is located right next to a beautiful beach and surrounded by nature. While you are there, you can also visit Olympos Beach. This beach, which is a protected area because it serves as a nesting ground for Caretta Caretta turtles, has exceptionally clean and beautiful waters. After touring the ancient city, you will have the chance to enjoy a swim. We recommend bringing your beach clothes and gear for this.

How to Get There?

The Ancient City of Olympos is located 85.7 kilometers from Antalya’s city center and is situated along the Lycian Way. You can take a bus from Antalya city center to reach the site. However, traveling by private car or renting a chauffeured vehicle would be a more comfortable option.

Entry Fee and Visiting Hours

Entry is subject to a fee, but Turkish citizens with a museum card can visit for free. For Turkish citizens without a museum card, the entry fee is 220 TL, while the fee for foreign visitors is 10 Euros.

The Ancient City of Olympos is open to visitors every day. However, the visiting hours differ between summer and winter seasons. During the summer season (April 1 - October 31), it is open from 08:30 to 19:00. In the winter season (October 31 - April 1), visiting hours are from 08:30 to 17:30.
